At least one person was killed in an explosion in a nightclub in the Azerbaijani capital Baku on Sunday night.

A 43-year-old employee of the restaurant had died, the Russian news agency Ria Novosti reported, citing the Azerbaijani public prosecutor's office.

Accordingly, 37 other people were injured, four of them seriously.

According to the Azerbaijani gas company Azerigas, a leak in a gas tank triggered the explosion.

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Emergency Situations had previously stated that it had been informed of a detonation in a city center bar early on Sunday morning.

A fire that broke out was extinguished.

The search and rescue operations were stopped in the morning, the ministry later said.

It published photos of the rubble of the building on its website.
