According to the German Weather Service (DWD), there could be double-digit minus temperatures in some places on Sunday night.

For the low mountain ranges, the DWD predicts frost of up to minus seven degrees.

Where it clears up and there is snow, it can even drop to minus ten degrees on Sunday night.

According to the information, lows of zero to minus eight degrees are also expected on Monday night.

April has started wintry in many parts of Germany.

It snowed on Saturday night between the Ostalb and Lower Franconia and over the Rhine-Main area, the Sauerland and the Eifel.

Locally there was up to 25 centimeters of snow.

The onset of winter in spring caused some drivers to skid at the weekend, for example in Bavaria.

On the A3 in Lower Franconia, three accidents involving seven cars happened on the slippery road when a car was going too fast and skidded, as a police spokesman said.

Three people were injured, one seriously.

In the Donauwörth area, the police spoke of several slippery accidents because some of the cars were already on the road with summer tires.

In Würzburg, the fire brigade was on duty to free trees from snow.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the highway maintenance departments were in constant use on Saturday night, distributing around 350 tons of salt and brine.

In accidents in the Hochsauerland district, a total of 14 people were injured, some seriously.

The 565 motorway near Bonn was temporarily closed in the morning because of falling ice blocks on a bridge.

In East Hesse, the police headquarters reported around a hundred accidents because of the slippery roads.

However, these were mostly light and only with body damage expired.

Several articulated lorries stood sideways on Autobahn 4.

A “quite rare” amount of snow for April

In Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Middle Franconia there was 20 centimeters of fresh snow, in Birx in the Rhön 16 centimeters and in Dermbach, around 30 kilometers away, 17 centimeters.

According to the DWD meteorologist, such amounts of snow are "quite rare" in April - although not exceptional.

There were always late onsets of winter, around 1986 or in the 1970s, he said.

It is remarkable, however, that the snow has currently fallen down to the lowlands.

According to the forecast, the snowfall over Germany will decrease.

However, it will initially remain cloudy, rainy and uncomfortable.

Only on Monday will the rain gradually give way to showers.

It's getting a little friendlier.

"After the short wintry interlude, we are heading towards a general change in the weather at the beginning of the new week," said a DWD meteorologist in Offenbach on Saturday.

Moist and somewhat milder sea air from the northwest reaches Central Europe.

On Monday and on the night of Tuesday, it brings gusts of wind, especially in the north German lowlands and in the middle.

Temperatures between seven and twelve degrees are expected during the day on Tuesday, and there is hardly any frost at night either.
