Huge waves sweep a Sydney beach and reach homes

Huge waves smashed into Australia's east coast on Saturday, hitting homes and engulfing Sydney's famous Bondi Beach.

Dangerous waves alerts were issued in most areas of the coast of New South Wales, where strong winds caused huge waves.

One of the videos showed a huge wave measuring five meters in height reaching homes, while spectators were seen fleeing waves that smashed into Avoca Beach, a 90-minute drive north of Sydney.

Peter Evans of Rescue New South Wales told AFP that officers were assisting a large number of residents in surfed homes in the area, but he was reassured that the situation was improving.

"Hopefully, the hardest is over and we don't have to face tonight or tomorrow what we experienced this morning and last night," he said.

In Sydney, the famous Bondi Beach was inundated with waves that smashed into pedestrian bridges and streamed into the adjacent road.

The Met Office issued a warning of dangerous waves and strong winds sweeping the region, which includes the north coast of New South Wales to the border of Victoria, throughout the weekend.

In the past weeks, the eastern Australian region has witnessed severe climatic phenomena, which have been exacerbated by the "La Niña" phenomenon and climate change.

The harsh weather conditions and floods have killed at least 22 people since the beginning of February.
