Will Smith resigns from the Hollywood Film Academy for the slap to Chris Rock: "I will accept any other consequence"

has resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood after slapping host

at the Oscars,

reported Friday , citing a statement from the actor.

"I betrayed the trust of the Academy.

I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and thank their extraordinary work," Smith's statement said.

"Therefore, I resign my membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and

that the Board deems appropriate," the statement added.
