In the new Covid stage that Spain is starting in April, changes in the use of masks indoors are not yet contemplated.

Now the surveillance and detection of cases is focused on the vulnerable and the population over 60 years of age, and quarantines are ruled out in the asymptomatic.

While

Covid begins to be treated as just another infection

, the population wonders how long it will take to relax other preventive measures.

What current use of masks?

According to Royal Decree 115/2022, of February 8, in closed spaces:

  • In any closed space for public use

or that is open to the public.

  • In large events that take place outdoors

    , when attendees are standing.

If they are seated, it will be mandatory when a safety distance of at least 1.5 meters between people cannot be maintained, except for groups of cohabitants.

  • In air, bus, or rail transport, including passenger platforms and stations, or by cable car

, as well as complementary public and private passenger transport in vehicles with up to nine seats, including the driver, if occupants of passenger cars do not live in the same address.

  • In closed spaces of ships and boats

when the safety distance of 1.5 meters cannot be maintained, except for groups of cohabitants.

What are the Health plans to remove the masks in the near future?

The Minister of Health,

Carolina Darias

, in relation to the possible date for the mandatory removal of indoor masks, has repeatedly stated this week that

"there is one day less

".

Thus,

she has not revealed when

the Government is considering that withdrawal and has indicated that the best time "will be when it is decided."

The Minister of Health of the Government of Aragon,

Sira Repollés

, explained that there is a preliminary document on the disappearance of the mandatory use of masks in interior spaces,

"which is being discussed due to the presentation of alerts

" and that, for the moment, "

It's pretty restrictive on how soon they're going to be removed

."

Congressional vote.

How valid is the Ciudadanos proposal voted in favor?

Congress approved this Thursday

a motion agreed by Citizens with the PSOE

that urges the Government to abolish the mandatory use of masks indoors, but, yes, when advised by the scientific community and health authorities.

It is a formal request for the suppression of the mask.

The text has been approved by 187 votes in favor,

including those of the proponents and Vox, 94 votes against, of the PP and the PNV, and 63 abstentions, of the deputies of United We Can and ERC, among others.

The two partners of the Government, therefore, have voted differently.

The motion consists of two points.

The first

urges the Executive to eliminate the mandatory use of masks indoors

, "in line with scientific evidence, with the epidemiological situation and with a comparative perspective."

And the second, which is

the contribution of the PSOE,

calls on it to take the appropriate steps to address the "reconsideration" of the measures to contain the Covid pandemic within the framework of the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System.

What about the de-escalation of the mask in schools?

In February, the Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP) proposed a calendar for the progressive removal of masks in classrooms, in stages and by groups from younger to older, with a reinforcement of ventilation protocols and in line with the proposals from regional pediatric societies.

The measure was transferred to the presentation of experts from the Ministry, but there has been no response.

The truth is that

the dates have already expired

.

The calendar began on Monday, February 28

, for the first and second years of Primary.

The following Monday, March 14, the third and fourth grade students would remove their mask in the classrooms.

The fifth and sixth of Primary, on Monday, March 28.

Right now,

the ESO students

, who would go to class without a mask on April 25, and the Baccalaureate students from May 9, would be pending to do without it.

In which countries is there no longer a mandatory mask?

Currently, they have already been eliminated in countries such as

Belgium, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Norway or the United States

.

In

Ireland

they are only mandatory

in the health field

.

But this week the Irish Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, given the increase in cases, has recommended its use on public transport and indoors.

In

Germany

, the de-escalation is also slow.

Yesterday,

Berlin became the first

German

Länder

to lift virtually all restrictions related to the pandemic, although

the use of a mask on public transport and in health facilities will continue to be mandatory.

The rest of the federal states are expected to follow him over the weekend, although some intend to maintain measures such as the use of a mask indoors for at least another month.

Despite the rebound in cases living

in France, the Executive only "strongly recommends" the use

of masks to certain categories of more vulnerable people, such as the elderly or immunosuppressed.

For its part,

Italy has just started a process of progressive easing of restrictions until May

, when it will be decided what to do with the mask, still in force in closed spaces, as in Spain.

With which airlines can you travel without a mask inside the planes?

For some time now, more and more airlines have made the use of masks on board optional.

Thus, the use of this measure will no longer be mandatory on

TUI, Jet2 and Heathrow airport flights

.

In the case of

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic

, it will only be removed if the country of destination allows it.

If they removed them now, could their use be resumed?

This week the Madrid Minister of Health,

Enrique Ruiz Escudero

,

was open to maintaining the use of the mask in the future in winter

, when the flu behaves again as it did before the pandemic, in places such as public transport or in health centers with immunocompromised patients.
