• A fleet of 16 toilets will be installed in places that previously lacked them: the quays of the Rhône, Blandan Park, Place Louis Pradel and the Saint-Paul station district.

  • Seven of them are reserved for women and two are accessible to people with reduced mobility.

  • Ecological, these toilets do not use water.

It's not the most elegant street furniture, but in case of an urgent need, a sanisette does a lot of service.

It is still necessary to find one, in working order, clean and well closed, in particular to preserve the modesty of the users...

The city of Lyon and the metropolis will therefore deploy a fleet of 16 toilets this month, in places that did not have any: the quays of the Rhône, the Blandan park, the place Louis Pradel and the district of the Saint- Paul.

Waterless toilets, recycled urine

These new types of sanitary facilities are part of an experiment carried out until the end of September.

In a press release published this Friday, the metropolis indicates three objectives: “the improvement of public health, especially in areas without equipment;

inclusiveness, by offering women a solution in the public space;

and the recovery of part of the urine for agriculture”.

Ecological, these toilets do not use water and their maintenance will be ensured by agents circulating by bicycle.

Seven of them are reserved for women and two are accessible to people with reduced mobility.

As for the urine, it will somehow be recycled.

“The phosphorus and nitrogen collected through the recovery of urine from sanitary facilities can be used, after processing the raw material, as fertilizers for local agriculture”, according to the press release.

A QR code will be placed on the front door to alert the cleaning services in the event of damage... or overflows.
