A large majority of Venezuelans in 2022 cannot eat enough.

For a year, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the Venezuelan NGO PROVEA investigated the food situation in the country.

Violation of the basic right to food;

opacity on food aid…their report that just came out is damning.

According to the latest survey by the Venezuelan Food Security Observatory, more than 9 out of 10 Venezuelans do not have access to normal food.

After years of severe shortages, foraging for food has become the top priority for citizens.

30% of children under 5 today suffer from chronic undernourishment.

How did we get here ?

After a year of research in Venezuela, FIDH and Provea provide some answers in a 72-page report.

According to the investigators, it is the institutional and democratic deterioration of the Venezuelan state and the public policies decided by the socialist regime that have caused this unprecedented food crisis in the country.

And while President Maduro has put in place food aid for the most vulnerable, it is only distributed to those who can identify themselves as voters of the ruling party.

In its latest bulletin, the Center for Analysis and Research in Human Rights (CARDH) reports a 58.45% increase in kidnapping cases in the first quarter of 2022, compared to the same period in 2021. 73 cases were recorded for the month of January 2022 against 65 in January 2021;

81 for the month of February 2022 against 50 in February 2021;

71 for the month of March 2022 compared to 27 in March 2021. The systematic police interventions in Croix-des-Bouquets have, to some extent, weakened the 400 Mawazo gang which, between July and December 2021, was responsible on average 60% of kidnapping cases.

Alberto Fujimori remains in prison, for the time being

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, asked the government of Peru to "refrain" from carrying out an order from the Constitutional Court ordering the release of former President Alberto Fujimori pending decide on an appeal.

This was brought by the families of the victims of massacres committed while Alberto Fujimori was in power in Peru, and for which he was sentenced in 2009 to 25 years in prison for crimes against humanity.

The Constitutional Court of Peru ordered, on March 17, 2022, the release of the 83-year-old former head of state for health reasons.
