The decision on the

possible punishment of Will Smith

after his assault on Chris Rock will have to

wait "several weeks"

.

David Rubin, president of the Hollywood Academy, and Dawn Hudson, its CEO, sent a letter to all members on Tuesday in which they are

very upset with the actor's behavior

during the Oscars and regret that he ruined the festive spirit that surrounds the ceremony each year.

What should have been "a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did an incredible job last year" ended up becoming one of the most awkward moments in the gala's history, "overshadowed by the

unacceptable and harmful behavior

on stage by a nominee".

The Academy, which announced on Monday the

opening of an investigation

, assures in the letter that they will follow the official procedure to determine the measures they take in this regard, which could include the expulsion of Smith from the organization and the withdrawal of the Oscar he won on Sunday. as best actor for his role in

The Williams Method

.

To be clear,

we condemn Mr. Smith's actions

that occurred on Sunday night.

"As outlined in our bylaws, the Academy's Board of Governors will now make a determination as to the appropriate action for Mr. Smith. As governed by California law regarding members of nonprofit organizations such as the Academy , and it's laid out in our standards of conduct, this has to follow an official process that will take a few weeks."

The Philadelphia actor

apologized onstage

upon accepting the award but made no mention of Rock.

After the ceremony, he did not hesitate to go to celebrate his achievement with the Oscar in hand.

The next day, he took to his Instagram account to issue

a broader pardon

, in which he did include the comedian.

"Violence in all its forms is poisonous and destructive," she wrote on her Instagram account.

"My behavior at the Academy Awards last night was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada's medical condition was too much for me and I reacted emotionally," she noted.

"I would like to

publicly apologize to you, Chris

(Rock). I was out of line and I was wrong. I am ashamed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."

The incident, which has been talked about ad nauseam in the last three days - in Hollywood and outside of it - occurred when Rock went out to present the Oscar for best documentary and made a joke about the appearance of Pinkett Smith, at the which he compared to

G.I. Jane

.

The actress has been open about her alopecia, which didn't stop the comedian from pranking her and visibly irritating her.

Immediately afterwards, her husband got up, walked decisively to Rock and gave him a slap in the face that stunned the comedian and the audience present at the gala.

From her seat, she yelled at Rock to get his wife out "of his fucking mouth."
