Humanity generates, each year, nearly two billion tons of municipal solid waste (those whose elimination is managed by the municipalities, that is to say from private housing, offices, shops, etc.).
If this figure does not speak to you, know that it corresponds, roughly speaking, to the filling of 822,000 Olympic swimming pools (about 2.4 trillion liters)!
Production linked to population
That said, which countries are the biggest “producers” of waste?
In absolute value, it is China which, with 395 million tonnes, occupies the first place of a very sad podium;
it is followed by the United States (265 million tonnes).
In terms of annual quantity generated per capita, the United States (812 kg/capita) is on the highest step.
They are closely followed by Monaco (!), Moldova, Mongolia, Liechtenstein and Denmark.
A French citizen produces "only" 548 kg per year.
The volume of waste generated on Earth increases, mechanically, as the world's population grows.
This is why global waste generation is expected to increase by 70% by 2050, according to the World Bank.
