Behind one of the most spectacular baroque arcades in the city, the latest luxury hotel has just opened in the capital: The Madrid Edition.

Located in the historic center,

in the Plaza de las Descalzas Reales

, this new hotel establishment is located in the emblematic headquarters of the Monte de Piedad in Madrid.

Where the lower classes used to come to pawn clothes and jewelry in exchange for loans, high-class tourists can now have

a punch on a velvet sofa

surrounded by a fireplace.

After two years of reform and several delays caused by the pandemic, the establishment opened its doors on March 8 and is in the preview phase to start shooting little by little.

The brand has

another 14 establishments

and is the second to open in Spain, after opening a branch in Barcelona in 2018.

The Madrid Edition, the most exclusive brand of the Marriott International chain, seeks

to unite the most sophisticated and innovative luxury with entertainment and enjoyment

.

It is no coincidence that the creator of this firm is Ian Schrager, founder of the mythical New York nightclub Studio 54, a cultural hive in the 70s.

For all these reasons, the hotel not only aspires to become a luxury urban resort but also aims to provide a wide range of leisure activities that will delight Madrid customers.

In this way, The Madrid Edition has five different spaces: the lobby, which is the heart of the hotel, where there will be live performances on weekends;

the Jerónimo Mexican restaurant

, by chef Enrique Olvera;

the Punch Room, a speak easy bar in the style of private London clubs where you can taste the best punches;

the spectacular roof terrace where the Oroya restaurant is located, directed by the Peruvian Diego Muñoz and, finally, a nightclub with a show that will open its doors in September.

Duplex with private pool

The establishment has

200 rooms, 23 of them suites

, as well as a gym, spa and a 17-meter-long rooftop

infinity

pool , one of which has the optical effect of extending to the horizon.

The offer is completed with two splendid duplexes located on the fourth floor with terrace and private pool.

The beds have a headboard that simulates the entrance porch.

Undoubtedly, one of the strong points of the accommodation is its location, a few meters from kilometer zero of Puerta del Sol. The main door of the establishment is on Celenque street,

almost opposite the Corte Inglés de Preciados

, and is climbing plants lining the walls and ceiling.

In the lobby there is

a spectacular staircase

with a plaster finish, an icon of the Edition brand.

But you can also enter from the Plaza de las Descalzas Reales and go through the gate with the Baroque altarpiece made by Pedro de Ribera in 1733. From this opening you can access the Jerónimo restaurant, where you can have the traditional Mexican pot coffee for breakfast or have eggs for lunch. rancheros with coconut horchata.

The hotel reception is located on a discreet side, so that the bustle of customers does not interrupt the activities of the lobby, which aims to become

a meeting point for tourists and locals.

If the Edition seal takes care of something, it is the design, so each piece of the property has been taken care of to the maximum.

The decoration designed by the British architect John Pawson and the French interior designer François Champsaur is full of nods to Spain because the brand always tries to blend in with the country of origin.

The lobby is dominated

by a large tapestry from the Royal Tapestry Factory

, a replica of an original, and several manila shawls from Seville decorate the sofas at the entrance.

The roof of the establishment is an authentic oasis and the Oroya restaurant is located there, whose decoration

simulates a greenhouse

with a glass space full of climbing plants.

A building with character

The construction of the Monte de Piedad has a long history behind it.

It was founded by Father Francisco Piquer in 1702 and, throughout its existence, it

has undergone various modifications.

Between 1967 and 1973 the previous reform was carried out that placed the Churrigueresque façade in its current location.

In 2016 the Montemadrid Foundation, owner of the property, sold the headquarters to the investment group KKH Property Investors, which was later acquired by the hotel fund Archer.

However, the Monte de Piedad preserves 2,000 meters in the basement of the block to continue its activity.

The opening of the Madrid Edition highlights the boom in luxury hotels in the capital.

Despite the hard times suffered with the pandamia, the openings have not stopped happening.

The Four Seasons kicked off

, but it was followed by the Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Cristiano Ronaldo's Pestana, Hard Rock de Atocha, Villa Magna and Santo Mauro, the latter two completely renovated.
