An ICE crashed into a car standing on the track in Vechelde in the Peine district.

A driver took the instructions from her navigation device a little too literally, turned left too early and suddenly found her car on the rails, a spokesman for the federal police said on Sunday.

Realizing she was stuck there, she got out and sought help.

But only a little later, an approaching ICE from Braunschweig hit the car at a speed of around 160 kilometers per hour.

The engine driver hardly had time to react in the dark.

The impact wedged the car under the locomotive.

According to the federal police, the 320 passengers were not injured.

They were able to change to another train on Saturday evening and continue.

The train driver suffered a slight shock.

The locomotive had to be raised to salvage the wreck.

The work was only completed after almost ten hours.

As a result, there were delays on the railway line between Braunschweig and Hildesheim.

The federal police estimate the damage at around 750,000 euros.
