A motorist drove his vehicle into a homeless camp in Salem, Oregon in the middle of the night, killing four people.

The police in Salem announced that the police and fire department were called around 2 a.m. (local time/11 a.m. CEST) on Sunday morning.

Two people died at the scene of the accident.

Two of the four critically injured died in hospital.

In addition, the driver was injured.

The police initially gave no information about the background to the incident.
