The incident of raping 10 children from “Al-Khalawi” sparks a wide wave of anger in Sudan

The commission of a teacher in one of the Noble Qur’an memorizing schools in western Sudan, which is known locally as “Al-Khalawi”, the crime of raping 10 children, sparked a wave of great anger in Sudanese circles and opened a wide debate about the physical and sexual abuse committed against the studying children.

Hundreds of khalawis are spread in most regions of Sudan and house thousands of students between the ages of 5 to 18 years, and they mostly come from different environments and cultures.

According to the "Sky News Arabia" website, dozens of videos have recently spread documenting serious violations committed against these children.

The controversy increased more after the recent rape incident, for which a court in the Darfur region sentenced the perpetrators to 15 years in prison, which specialists saw as an unchecked sentence and not commensurate with the size of the crime committed.

Yasser Moussa, a mental health specialist and expert in the field of children’s rights, believes that al-Halawi in its current form constitutes an incubating environment for the practice of violence against children, because most of them depend on teachers who are graduates of al-Halawi, who have gone through similar circumstances during which some of them were exposed to some form of physical or sexual violence currently practiced, which makes them have More likely to apply the same practices they were exposed to during their childhood.

Moussa says that the practices of many al-Halawi in Sudan contradict all local and international laws relating to children's rights, signed by Sudan.

Moses points out that those laws and charters stipulate the inherent right of the child to live a normal childhood that enables him to receive a formal education subject to strict educational controls and does not, of course, prevent him from memorizing the Qur’an and receiving religious sciences whenever he has the desire.

Moussa warns of the seriousness of the negative societal consequences of the violations that children are exposed to in al-Halawi.
