Jennifer Daniel, the woman behind the emoticons we use the most
She has spent more than 30 years
at Rai,
the Italian radio and television, as an editor on different fronts, and is now the brand new
director of RaiSport,
the specialized sports network.
Alessandra De Stefano
arrives at the sports newsroom determined and willing to 'age out' the paradigms of the narratives used up to now in Rai and she knows that
her task is not going to be easy.
Alessandra De Stefano has very clear ideas.
Reporter, author, deputy director and now
the first woman to direct RaiSport, she says
: "The only gender that matters is skill.
Sport is sexist,
we know that, and the first way to change it is through production: what's the point of
framing a shot always from below
to show women's
thighs, ankles
and shoes?
Against sexism on television
The new director is determined to put an end to that old patina dragged by the paradigms of sports narrations and that have been used until today in Rai itself, a chain about which she does not miss an opportunity to remember as the great school in which it has been formed and that has contributed to projecting her as the head of the sports newsroom.
But Alessandra De Stefano knows that
it won't be easy.
The changes in the production
of the programs and coverage of the events are fundamental for her
, which will have to put an end to putting the focus of the camera on the necklines, the openings and the heels of the guests and the presenters: "For me only skill counts, although the sport is macho, we know that".

Changes are coming in RaiSport
So, according to Alessandra De Stefano, the first step is to change how these sports programs are recorded.
"We have to take off the decorative mask of femininity, that sad
'she's beautiful and also good at her thing,'"
she says.
That each one follows her style, but, according to the director, "
I would only wear certain necklines on the beach."
De Stefano has had a long history as
a cycling reporter.
"Going behind the cyclists for so many years I have learned a lot, I have come a long way", she has said, and that now asks her journalists to get deeply into the melee.
"That they be correct but determined, that they do not shy away from the aggressiveness of the supreme powers or the press offices: if you are prepared and work seriously,
your authority
will always lead you to be a privileged interlocutor for the athletes," he reflects.

Revolution in the Rai
In the name of gender equality in sports as well, Alessandra De Stefano announces upcoming revolutions, starting with the matches of the Italian national team, which
could be commented on by a female reporter.
And she does not rule out that there are also
at the foot of the field.
Changes are coming in RaiSport...
