Spotify has previously defended that their service should remain in Russia as they are needed to be able to offer information in the country.

Now they are shutting down the service and expect to be completely away from the Russian market in early April.

"After carefully considering our options based on the current circumstances, we have landed in the difficult decision to completely suspend our service in Russia," a spokesperson for Spotify wrote in a press release.

The decision is based on the fact that the business constitutes a security risk for employees, and possibly also listeners, the company believes.

"Spotify has considered it important to try to keep our service available in Russia in order to provide reliable and independent news and information sources in the region.

Unfortunately, the recently adopted legislation places further restrictions on access to information, eliminates freedom of expression and criminalises certain types of news, ”it writes.
