Halle Berry may be proud of having been the first black woman to win an Oscar, but this situation makes her a little bitter.
In an interview with The
New York Times
,
the Shadow of Hatred
actress opened up about her experience at the 2002 ceremony when she was nominated for Best Actress.
“At that time, if you didn't win the Globe, you couldn't really win the Oscar.
So I had resigned myself to believing that it was great to be there, but that I wouldn't win…”, says the star, who at the time had lost the Golden Globe to Sissy Spacek.
Against all odds, she will eventually win the Oscar, but what happened (or didn't happen) afterward apparently depresses her to the core.
“It didn't open a door.
The fact that there is no one next to me breaks my heart,” she added.
Cherry on the cake
Since Halle Berry's Oscar win, two black men have won Best Actor, Jamie Foxx and Forest Whitaker.
No woman held the statuette after her.
This year, as is often the case, no black women are nominated for best actress.
Will Smith and Denzel Washington are among the contenders for the Best Actor Oscar.
“We cannot always judge success or progress by the number of awards earned.
The awards are the icing on the cake – it's your peers telling you you've been exceptionally excellent this year – but does that mean that if we don't get 'exceptionally excellent' we don't have not been excellent, that we have not succeeded, that we are not changing the world with our art and that our opportunities are not expanding?
said Halle Berry.
The Oscars will take place this Sunday and will be broadcast on ABC in the United States and Canal+ in France.
