Under pressure from investors, disappointed by the results on the stock market, the founder of the American information media Buzzfeed announced on Wednesday a plan of 30 voluntary departures, which concerns journalists from the news division.

This is a new crisis for this pure player, renowned for its investigation unit.

The American pure player Buzzfeed is going through a bad patch.

Listed on the stock exchange for four months, this news media has disappointed investors with results 20% below the objectives set for the year 2021 and it must cut its workforce.

The main shareholders of the group are even demanding the closure of the News section of Buzzfeed, which is losing ten million dollars a year.

Faced with pressure from investors, Jonah Peretti, the founder and CEO of Buzzfeed, announced on Wednesday a plan of 30 voluntary departures.

This concerns journalists from the news department.

Departures of leading editorial journalists

A few hours before the announcement of the plan, several leading journalists, including the editor-in-chief of Buzzfeed News or the head of the investigation unit, which makes the success of this media, have chosen to leave the editorial staff.

This is not the first crisis that the group has experienced and it is not the first time that Buzzfeed has parted ways with journalists for economic reasons.

By 2021, several dozen editors had been laid off.

Also in 2018, the French version of Buzzfeed was shut down, leading to the dismissal of 14 French journalists.
