Jacques Witkowski, prefect of Seine-Saint-Denis, declared the Grand Hôpital Paris Nord project to be of public interest on Monday.

The construction of the establishment is planned in Saint-Ouen (Seine-Saint-Denis) and should be completed in 2028. Eventually, 1,000 patients will be able to be cared for in the new buildings.

Critics are rising

The project is feared by some, including local residents and caregivers, says Actu Seine-Saint-Denis.

The latter denounce the loss of 300 beds between the new site and the two hospitals of which it is the merger, Bichat in Paris and Beaujon in Clichy-sous-Bois (Hauts-de-Seine).

Residents see future nuisances with a dim view.

The Grand Hôpital Paris Nord will include a university center, a maternity hospital and a medical and surgical center.

Following the prefect's decision, it may be built on private land after expropriation.

The decree was made possible by the lifting in February of the reservations expressed during the 2021 public inquiry.
