The Petit Pigeolet SPA refuge in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (Vaucluse) organized an animal festival this weekend.

The operation comes after the health crisis linked to the coronavirus has significantly slowed the pace of adoptions after a sharp increase around the first confinement.

The pandemic has also led to an increase in abandonments, indicates France Bleu Vaucluse.

Health and economic crisis

The economic difficulties of households partly explain the phenomenon, analyzed the communication officer of the SPA in Vaucluse.

She also noted that “people have resumed a normal life, they have realized that owning an animal entails a certain number of obligations”.

The manager also deplored abandonments now spread over the whole year, instead of only certain periods before.

The Isle-sur-la-Sorgue shelter is home to between 600 and 700 animals available for adoption.

Among them are mainly cats and dogs but also horses and pigs.
