A portrait of Marilyn Monroe for sale for an astronomical amount

A painting of Marilyn Monroe by pop icon Andy Warhol in the 1960s will be auctioned in May with an estimated value of about $200 million, Christie's announced.

"Shot Sig Blue Marilyn Monroe", or "Shot of Marilyn Sober Blue", "is expected to be the most expensive painting of the 20th century ever sold at auction," said Alex Rutter, head of Christie's Art Department in the 20th and 21st Centuries.

The 1964 painting of Monroe's face, with bright yellow hair, pink face and light blue eye shadow, is one of five Warhol paintings of Monroe.

"Warhol used scanning technology in these paintings and in this particular painting, and he would never use it again," Rutter said.

It was a very complex method.”

The painting was owned by the Thomas and Doris Amann Foundation in Zurich, and all proceeds from the sale will go to the foundation dedicated to improving the lives of children around the world.

"The single sale of this painting will be the highest-profit charitable auction since the Peggy and David Rockefeller Group in 2018," said Mark Porter, president of Christie's American branch.

Christie's says the highest price paid for a Warhol painting was for "Silver Car Crash (Double Destroyer)", which sold for $105 million in 2013.
