England is preparing to face the new wave of the coronavirus by administering, starting today,

the fourth dose of the vaccine to the most vulnerable population groups.

From this Monday, those over 75 years of age, the elderly in residences and those with a more vulnerable immune system will receive the summons to receive the fourth puncture since December 2020.

The decision, endorsed by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization, the JCVI, is preceded by a month in which the incidence and hospitalizations have grown again.

And it is that during the last 30 days the United Kingdom has experienced a revitalization of the pandemic.

Socializing, going back to work, and possibly the diminishing effect of booster shots and second doses seem to be making it possible for the virus to become stronger again.

Last Friday, for example, the country declared 90,349 new cases, more than double the 39,000 that were registered on the first day of March.

Some data that, however, could again be underestimating reality, since according to the British National Statistics Office it is estimated that one in twenty people in the United Kingdom is currently infected by the virus.

The administration of the second booster dose, also called the fourth dose, arrives in England today, but

has been pricked in Scotland for two weeks and one in Wales.

Starting this morning, hundreds of street-level vaccination centers, including not only outpatient clinics, but also urban buses and pharmacies, will begin to prepare the population for the new wave that is already taking place. cooking, because, although in recent months the United Kingdom has decided to return to normality, the pandemic has never completely gone away.

"Unfortunately we continue to see many people seriously hospitalized by Covid, so it is still vitally important that those who are most affected by the pandemic take a new step forward," says Nikki Kanani, doctor and one of the authorized voices within of the British vaccination programme.

During the last weeks, the evolution of the Covid in the country has already been showing signs of a worsening of the situation

.

After several months of a general fall in the figures, in March it was not only the cases that suffered a rebound, but also hospitalizations.

According to the latest official figures, the number of people in intensive care grew last Thursday to 14,671

, a figure not seen since the beginning of the year when the omicron variant threatened to spin the situation out of control.

In the case of deaths, however, the data have not undergone a significant variation.

Fifth dose in autumn

At the moment

the Government's plans are unknown as to whether the fourth dose will be extended to other population groups in

the coming weeks as happened with previous vaccination campaigns, but everything seems to indicate that, at least, in the fall of this year there will be a new immunization of all strata of society to face next winter with the maximum possible guarantees.

The incidence, however, of the successive campaigns has been falling, since the percentage of the population that has decided to receive the different punctures has been decreasing.

If 91.7% of people over 12 years of age have the first dose and 85.7% agreed to take the second, only 67.1% have received the booster dose available since the end of 2021
