And in the end, everyone dies (or almost).

The caustic denouement of

Don't Look Up

now has alternate endings.

Scientists and climate activists, solicited by Netflix, have imagined other outcomes to the famous satirical comedy by Adam McKay which describes the end of humanity after the fall of a comet on Earth.

In the disaster film broadcast by Netflix in 2021, the two astronomers played by Hollywood stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence spotted a comet speeding towards Earth but faced denial from the media, public opinion and politicians.

New scenarios

The cataclysmic outcome of this allegory of climate change was supposed to make us aware of reality, "this reality being of course the inevitable impact of the comet", explains director Adam McKay in an article published Friday on the site of the platform .

To show that it is still possible to act, the director asked various activists, scientists and global climate specialists to design a scenario to avoid the worst.

Global cooperation or individual awareness

Thus the meteorologist Eric Holthaus imagines the leaders of countries forming a “world council of the comet” and bringing together all the voluntary forces to erect in the emergency a space launcher and deflect the meteorite.

For paleoclimatologist and co-president of the IPCC (group of UN climate experts) Valérie Masson-Delmotte, the three heroes of the film can compensate for the inaction of the powerful by forming a group of young scientists, capable of designing a system innovative defense that will divert the course of the comet.

Finally, according to ethnologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall, the billionaire who is responsible in the film for the cancellation of the last chance mission, could give up his disastrous project after a sermon from his granddaughter: "Grandfather it's my planet too and it's my future that's at stake”.

Many climate change observers, however, have criticized

Don't Look Up

for being a simplistic allegory of the environmental consequences of human activity.

In the film, the disaster could have been avoided.

In the case of climate change, IPCC reports show that disaster is already here.

Too bad the scientists commissioned by Netflix don't have such pretty solutions to fight the climate crisis.
