Myanmar is reopening its borders to foreign tourists after a two-year entry ban.

"We will open all international flights on April 17," said the state health authority on Saturday, referring to the falling number of corona infections.

Myanmar closed its borders in March 2020 with the onset of the pandemic.

A military coup last year, followed by massive protests and brutal action by the military government, further isolated the country.

It is about "improving the tourism sector and ensuring smooth travel for visitors to Myanmar," the agency said.

Travelers must therefore be fully vaccinated against the corona virus, go into quarantine for a week and do two PCR tests.

The coup and the ensuing violence have further impacted the Southeast Asian country's economy, which was already suffering from a lack of tourists.

Many international companies withdrew from the country.

According to local organizations, more than 1,600 people have been killed by security forces and over 11,000 arrested since the coup.
