The book Paradais takes place in a luxurious, gated community in southeastern Mexico.

There, the poor Polo who takes care of gardens and swimming pools and the rich but bullied Franco who lives in a luxury villa meet.

Although they come from two completely different social classes, they share the same hopeless view of life.

Something that makes them make dangerous decisions and commit criminal acts.

- I wanted to tell about environments from my upbringing but also the lack of faith in the future of young people around Mexico, Melchor says.

Want to show another side of the violence in Mexico

Fernanda Melchor has had a great impact internationally and so far two of her books, Paradais and Hurricane Season, have been translated into Swedish.

Although her books are often about harsh, violent societies, Melchor hopes to create an understanding of the man behind it.

- We have many problems with corruption, violence and inequality that must change, but sometimes people read my books and think that violence only exists in Mexico, Melchor says.

She believes that violence often comes from feelings of frustration and despair that she believes all people can recognize themselves in.

- It is always easiest to see the violence in others.

It is always easier to see what bothers us in other people, but violence lies in human nature.
