Discussions on the future of the Island of Beauty continue both verbally and in writing.

This Friday, the autonomist president of the Executive Council of Corsica Gilles Simeoni transmitted to the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin "a proposal" for a text.

This document summarizes their discussions on the institutional future of the island, his entourage told AFP.

It is still "under discussion", told AFP the entourage of the Minister of the Interior who began Friday the third and last day of his trip to Corsica.

Sent to the island by President-candidate Macron to ease tensions after the attack in prison on Yvan Colonna, assassin of the prefect Erignac, Gérald Darmanin created a surprise by opening up the prospect of "autonomy".

“First stone of a historical process”

Welcoming "very strong commitments", Gilles Simeoni had however wished that his exchanges with the minister "be recorded in a document" before being able to consider having "laid the first stone of a historic process".

A request accepted by Gérald Darmanin: “President Simeoni asked me for a sort of report on our exchanges (…) I am in favor of it”, explained the minister Thursday during a press point, but evoking issues of "timing" and "participants" in the upcoming negotiations.

“Knowing what this autonomy is”

“The ministers engage the word of the State, what I say, I am able to write it”, had hammered the tenant of the place Beauvau while remaining cautious on the result to come: “Are we will agree at the end of these numerous and difficult discussions, I am not sure".

"The question is to know what this autonomy is", had previously declared the minister, putting forward the example of the "status" of Polynesia.

In this context, the content of the document under discussion is of great importance to nationalists, some of whom are already wary of a possible reversal of the state.

“Customary of the about-face”

“Mr. Macron being accustomed to an about-face, his position yesterday on Corsica is far below the comments and proposals made, in official meetings, by Gérald Darmanin.

We can consider that the words of a candidate president cancel those of the Minister of the Interior”, tweeted Friday Paul-Felix Benedetti, independence leader of “Core in Fronte”.

President Macron estimated Thursday that the debate on the "autonomy" of Corsica was not "taboo", while laying down "clear lines": "in the French Republic, the French language is the language", said he insisted, specifying that he wanted "first a return to calm".

Core in Fronte holds six of the seven separatist seats in the Assembly of Corsica, the last going to Corsica Libera, the party of its former president Jean-Guy Talamoni.
