As at each end of the presidential term, the newspaper "Les Echos" publishes its audit of France on Friday.

The entire editorial staff of the newspaper mobilized to take stock of the five years of presidency of the Republic of Emmanuel Macron, as explained to Europe 1 Nicolas Barré, the editorial director.

INTERVIEW

Purchasing power, education, security, health, taxation: what does France look like at the end of the Macron presidency?

The newspaper

Les Echos

publishes Friday (and as before each presidential election) a special 14-page notebook entitled "The audit of France" on the state of the country at the end of this mandate.

The objective of this supplement: to measure and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the country, five years after the arrival of Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée.

Nicolas Barré, editorial director of Les

Echos

, explains to Europe 1 how this audit was carried out.

"This is an audit on which the entire editorial staff has been working for several weeks, with all our specialists in the various fields: politics, taxation, the labor market, industry, defence, etc.", indicates- he.

"It's really in-depth work to take a step back from what happened during the five-year term. And also to try to have elements of comparison with the major countries comparable to France."

Learning success, environmental gaps

An unlocked labor market, more favorable taxation for businesses, but also shortcomings in the ecological transition, the journalists of Les

Echos

have gone through all the consequences of the reforms and shortcomings of this last five-year term.

"What stands out are the major reforms undertaken on taxation (in particular capital taxation), labor market reforms, apprenticeship reform which is undoubtedly a major reform of this five-year period", says Nicolas Barré.

"Never had we reached this level of more than 700,000 apprentices."

"There are also gray areas in this assessment: in terms of the environment, France is lagging behind in renewable energies", adds the editorial director.

"For example, we have no offshore wind turbines in France. On the evolution of the debt, we are today one of the most indebted European countries."
