After Cyclone Gombe passed through, the death toll in Mozambique has risen to more than 50.

The authorities in the province of Nampula in the north of the East African country reported 53 fatalities on Thursday.

Accordingly, 31 other dead were found in Lunga in the coastal district of Mossuril on the Indian Ocean, which had previously been difficult to reach due to destroyed roads and fallen trees.

Authorities representative Mety Gondola, who reached the district by boat, reported on the radio about a "dramatic situation".

The death toll could rise as rescue and recovery operations in the worst-hit areas are ongoing.

Cyclone Gombe hit the East African coast on Friday last week with wind speeds of up to 170 kilometers per hour and heavy rainfall.

Thousands of houses were destroyed in Mozambique and millions of people were affected by the storm.

According to the Civil Protection Agency, Gombe was stronger than Cyclone Idai, which devastated the country in 2019.

The damage was not quite as devastating, however, because "Gombe" quickly lost strength after hitting the coast.
