US police officer sentenced to one year in prison for killing a dog

An American policeman was sentenced to one year in prison, with more than four years suspended, for killing a dog and giving false statements to investigators about the circumstances of the animal's death.

Richard Chenabe, accused of "acts of torture against a dog," pleaded guilty in November and was sentenced Friday during a Virginia court hearing, according to court documents.

On October 19, 2021, Chenabe shot the dog, a beagle, who was returning to his partner.

When the police arrived at the couple's home, the officer claimed that he had fired to stop a bear, a Virginia animal species, but appeared confused when making his statement, local media reported.

An autopsy of the dog's carcass showed that it was the victim of a close-range shooting, which contradicts Chennaby's account.

The investigation also revealed traces of blood removed from the kitchen.

The police in Richmond, Chennai, who had been recruited in their ranks in 2016,

were then discharged. The motives behind killing the dog were not made public.

Dogs occupy an important place in the lives of many Americans who show a great affection for these animals.
