A pregnant woman and her unborn child have died after an attack on a maternity ward in the besieged southeastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol.

This was announced by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on Monday.

A photo showing how several men carry the pregnant woman on a stretcher through the destroyed clinic complex caused a worldwide sensation.

The ministry demanded in its tweet with hashtags “stop Russian aggression” and “lock down the skies over Ukraine now”.

The photos from the destroyed building in the embattled city on the Azov Sea also showed a second pregnant woman in polka dot pajamas running to safety.

This woman has now given birth to a girl, as several media reported unanimously.

Russia had accused the Ukrainians of provocation.

The attacked building was no longer used as a maternity hospital, but was most recently used as a camp for ultra-radical fighters from the Ukrainian Azov battalion, Moscow claimed.

The United Nations also disagreed.

Pro-Russian internet users had described the photographed pregnant women, one of whom worked as a beauty blogger, as actresses.
