Environmentalists made a surprising proposal during the community council of Grand Avignon (Vaucluse) on Monday.

They suggested introducing free urban transport for six months.

The president of the agglomeration community promised to study the question and considered launching a debate, reports Le Dauphiné Libéré.

3 million euros budget

Jean-Pierre Cervantes, EELV community advisor, presented the temporary measure as a financial boost for residents.

He also saw a way to encourage them to favor public transport and thus reduce pollution.

Vice-president of finance Xavier Belleville, however, expressed concern about the cost, estimated at 3 million euros, and the consequences on future investments.

Environmentalists then pointed to the operating surplus of 6 million euros generated last year by transport and the 36.5 million euros in the tax on the payment of mobility in 2021. They hope to see the measure discussed at the vice-presidents' meeting on 16 March.
