Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes, "first department" in France to welcome them, are overwhelmed by the flow of refugees from Ukraine, said the mayor of Nice on Tuesday.

"But while 40% of those who flee Ukraine by car arrive in France by [the A8 motorway], it is clear that we are, like the prefecture, overwhelmed", pointed out Christian Estrosi.

The ex-LR mayor of Nice therefore calls for “the solidarity of everyone in the department where reception is not organized by all the intermunicipalities, in the region and even in the other departments”.

A one-stop shop at the prefecture

To date, "nearly 1,000 Ukrainians" have been received at the House for the reception of victims in Nice where a housing solution is offered to them.

The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture confirms that for the past week it has observed "a significant influx of refugees", with "500 to 800 people passing through the Turbie toll every day, some staying in the department, others going to Spain or in Portugal ".

Before the conflict, the Alpes-Maritimes had 995 Ukrainians with a residence permit.

And 800 refugees are currently housed in the department.

"We are in the process of initiating a loosening procedure with the regional prefecture in order to direct these refugees towards other departments", specified the State services which opened "a one-stop shop which processes 300 requests per day of Ukrainians waiting for a residence permit" and which works "even on Saturdays".
