Figures that frighten the many French people who cannot do without their car to get around.

  • On social networks, many Internet users ironically thank Emmanuel Macron, whom they consider responsible for one of the highest prices of diesel at the pump on the planet.

Fuel prices continue to soar in France, a direct consequence of the war in Ukraine.

The symbolic milestone of €2 per liter of diesel was crossed last week.

Some stations even display 2.20 euros, as on the Ile de Groix.

On social networks, many publications claim that France is one of the countries in which this fuel is the most expensive: 38 cents in Russia, 1.06€ in Ukraine, 1.22€ in Hungary… According to the very viral publication, the liter of diesel is much lower abroad than in France, where, depending on the version, it sometimes reaches €2, sometimes €2.25.

On social networks, some motorists do not believe their wallets: “It seems bewildering the amount of the different tariffs and particularly in Western Europe.

FAKE OFF

The figures put forward in the viral publication in recent days on social networks are rather in line with the statement of the specialized site Globalpetrolprices.com, which lists the prices at the pump in the world.

According to the latest statement, dated March 7, it was necessary to count 0.357€ for a liter of diesel in Russia, 1.064€ in Ukraine, 1.157 in the United States, 1.188 in Poland, 1.235 in Australia, 1.218 in Hungary, 1.192 in Japan, 1,328 in Andorra.

Figures very close to those relayed on social networks.

As of March 7, the price recorded in France was €1.976.

As for Venezuela, it is the country in which fuel costs the least, with just over 2 cents per liter of diesel – and not 0.45€ as the viral publication indicates.

And it is in Hong Kong that we find the highest prices with an average of 2,831 dollars or 2,609 euros.

But beyond this comparison with countries where the standards of living and taxation are very different from France, our European neighbors have suffered the same surge in the price of diesel since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 last February.

In Germany, for example, prices can go up to €2.3 for a liter, according to comparison sites.

In Spain, some stations display €1.82, as in Catalonia.

And the price is also high in Italy (€1.84), the Netherlands and the United Kingdom (around €1.9) or in Belgium (€2).

The particularly high prices can be explained by multiple factors.

First, the price of fuel is set in dollars.

And, since the start of 2021, the euro has weakened against the US dollar.

Then, the current context of war in Ukraine has a strong impact on the price per barrel.

To cope with soaring fuel prices, the Prime Minister, Jean Castex, announced a “discount at the pump of 15 centimes per litre”.

It will apply from April 1 and for four months for all French people.

The measure will apply to all fuels and should save €9 on a 60-litre tank, according to Jean Castex.
