Sales of an object that has gone out of fashion have increased in the United States in 2021: those of CDs.

Last year, they jumped 21% according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

This represents 46.6 million CDs sold, compared to 31 million in 2020. Figures which are still very far from sales at the beginning of the century: more than 700 million CDs were sold in the United States in 2004, recalls

.

But this burst remains a first for 20 years.

However, it is not certain that the CD will sign its big comeback.

As 2020 was a special year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many businesses had to close, resulting in a drop in CD sales.

Big success of streaming platforms

To find out if the trend is confirmed, we will have to wait for the figures for the year 2022. The ancestor of the CD, on the other hand, continues to be very popular.

Indeed, the sale of vinyl has increased by 61% between 2020 and 2021, representing a profit of a billion dollars for this industry in the United States.

For their part, streaming platforms such as Spotify, Deezer or Apple Music continue to grow.

Revenue exceeded $12 billion in 2021, up 24% year-on-year.
