The inhabitants of several municipalities located near Albertville (Savoie) were surprised to feel the earth tremble under their feet this Saturday at the end of the afternoon.
The earthquake occurred at 6:03 p.m.
Witnesses quoted by France Bleu Pays de Savoie also said they heard a dull noise.
The epicenter of the phenomenon has been located.
The tremor felt in three departments
It was in Mercury (Savoie), at an estimated depth of between 4 and 5 km.
As for the magnitude of the earthquake, it was assessed at 4.8 by the French Central Seismological Bureau but at 4.2 by SISmalp, the Alpine Seismicity Observatory.
The tremors were particularly felt in Chambéry (Savoie), Thonon-les-Bains, Annecy (Haute-Savoie) and Grenoble (Isère).
The earthquake caused no casualties.
Any material damage is being assessed by the departmental fire and rescue service (SDIS).
The specialists are particularly interested in three sites whose residents have alerted to the weakening of buildings or chimneys.
