It was time !

The compositions of the periodic protections will be listed on the packaging “by January 1, 2023 at the latest”, announced this Friday the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran.

Commitment of Olivier Véran

Alongside the composition, the precautions for use and the serious adverse effects that the components of the intimate protections can cause must appear on the packaging or on a notice, according to a draft decree.

"With this decree, I want to ensure that every woman knows what's in her tampon or towel," Olivier Véran said in a statement.

Entry into force in 2023

The minister's entourage indicated that "discussions" were underway with manufacturers with a view to entry into force before 2023. The decree being prepared provides that the precautions for use mention the importance of washing hands before insertion or removal of intimate protection or the maximum recommended wearing time.

No legislation so far

Intimate protection falls into the category of everyday consumer goods in France, unlike in the United States where tampons are listed among medical devices.

As a result, no regulations have until now required manufacturers to make the composition of the protections visible or to provide a notice with the contraindications.

A parliamentary report in February 2020 recommended the obligation to mention the possible presence of traces of toxic substances on the packaging to warn of any risk of "menstrual toxic shock".
