According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the nationwide seven-day incidence of new corona infections was 1439.0 on Friday morning.

The day before the incidence was 1388.5, on Friday last week it was 1196.4.

The value quantifies the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants over a period of seven days.

As the RKI further reported, citing data from the health authorities, the number of new infections reported within 24 hours was 252,836.

262,752 new infections were reported the day before, compared to 217,593 a week ago.

The total number of registered cases of infection in Germany since the beginning of the corona pandemic has increased to 16,757,658.

According to the RKI, 249 further deaths related to the corona virus were registered within 24 hours.

The total number of corona deaths recorded in Germany rose to 125,272.

New variant and loosening

According to the RKI, the easier transferability of the omicron subtype BA.2 and the withdrawal of contact-reducing measures are probably responsible for the renewed increase in Covid-19 cases.

By the end of February, the proportion of BA.2 in a sample had risen to 48 percent, according to the Corona weekly report on Thursday evening.

The week before, the figure was still 38 percent.

"The further course of the pandemic depends to a large extent on how behavior in the population changes and to what extent possible contacts relevant to infection increase."

In 10 out of 16 federal states, the seven-day incidence of new corona infections has increased in the past week.

According to the weekly report, the highest incidences are still recorded in the group of 5 to 24 year olds.

The last time it was there was around 2,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days.

In people aged 65 and over, the seven-day incidence stagnated in the previous week.
