  Tang Guoliang, an 85-year-old retired faculty member of Jiangsu University, recently donated 100,000 yuan to the school library to set up the "National Excellent Talents" Diligent Study Fund to reward college students who study hard and have excellent grades.

This is also the school's first fund project to encourage more reading and good reading.

  In addition to setting up the Diligent Reading Fund, Tang Guoliang also donated 167 medical books that have been collected for many years.

It includes 103 volumes of early medical professional books, 25 volumes of teaching handouts and manuscripts, 24 volumes of medical journals and 15 volumes of personal reading notes.

The earliest medical book was published in 1950.

Education after retirement

  "In those days, I was studying these books and practicing at the same time. Whenever I encountered intractable diseases, I looked through these books and could always find some medical theoretical basis."   Donate books and set up reading funds, why do you do this?

Tang Guoliang's answer was simple: "I'm getting old, I don't know when to leave, I have to use my residual heat and do more meaningful things."

  "I have special feelings for poor students. I must support poor students who are self-reliant and self-reliant." Since retiring for 25 years, Tang Guoliang has been helping students with difficulties in study and life in the school's work committee.

10 years ago, I heard that a girl in her hometown was having a hard time. Tang Guoliang learned about the specific situation after several setbacks, and finally entrusted the school closure committee to connect with the girl's school and donated 1,000 yuan to the girl.

"I was born in a poor family, so I know the hardships of life and understand the importance of reading." Tang Guoliang said.

I love reading, and I wrote millions of words in 15 medical reading notes.

  "My experience tells me that reading is useful, and reading does change fate! I hope young people can read more and read well!" Tang Guoliang, who loved reading since childhood, has persisted in his reading habit even though he is in his old age.

  Tang Guoliang is a frequent visitor to the Jiangsu University Library. According to the library's statistics, Tang Guoliang has maintained a loan volume of nearly 50 books per year in recent years. The most recent loan is Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Diseases of the Digestive System and Diary of Coronary Heart Disease.

  "Everywhere I go, I like to go to the library." Tang Guoliang said with a smile, many of his children and grandchildren have overseas study or work experience, and they always go to the library there first when visiting relatives.

  Tang Guoliang's habit of taking reading notes has also persisted for many years. The 15 medical notes donated by him have more than one million words.

He opened the notes and said, "These notes contain many important medical cases that I have diagnosed and treated since my work. I hope they will be of reference value for future medical teachers and students."

  Tang Guoliang's daughter, Tang Jingxia, said that after the old man suffered from stomach cancer and underwent surgery in 2013, he was more diligent in remembering his reading notes. Recently, he often organizes books late into the night to donate books.

"As a family, we can all feel that he is racing against time to do these things."

  The old man is generous to others, but very "stingy" to himself.

In Tang Guoliang's family, "diligent study, kind to others, honest and thrifty, and regular exercise" are the family traditions.

Tang Jingxia said: "The old man still has very little expenses after retirement, and now he always likes to 'pick up' his family's old clothes to wear. That's how he saves money little by little and donates it to those in need."

  It is understood that the next step of Jiangsu University will be based on the wishes of the donors, to formulate perfect "national talents" student selection rules. On this basis, ensure the open, fair and just selection of students who love reading and are excellent in both character and learning, and guide more college students to love reading, read well, be good at reading, and be good at using books.
