The
roast
, literally "grilled", is an American practice between clash and comedy, where a celebrity is mocked by friends and comedians.
Before reciprocating.
The Comedy Central channel popularized the concept with its
Comedy Central Roast
show and guests like David Hasselhoff, James Franco, Justin Bieber
Throughout the month of March, starting this Thursday, Comedy Central is broadcasting four new
roasts
, on Bob Saget, Pamela Anderson, Donald Trump and William Shatner.
If the stand-up, in its modern and American form, has found its place on the French comedy scene, other types and practices of humor from the United States have not made it across the Atlantic. such as sketch shows on
Saturday Night Live
, cult films with Will Ferrell or the
roast
.
Literally “roasted” or “grilled”, the concept sees a celebrity being mocked by friends and humorists, by personal and gratuitous jokes, under the eye of a
roastmaster
and a hilarious or shocked public.
Or both.
The
Comedy Central Roast
show has been instrumental in popularizing the
roast
for 20 years with guests of honor such as David Hasselhoff, Charlie Sheen, James Franco, Justin Bieber or, for the most recent, Alex Baldwin in 2019. French Comedy Central offers every Thursday in March at 11 p.m., four cult and unpublished roasts in France, on the deceased Bob Saget, this Thursday, then on Pamela Anderson, Donald Trump and William Shatner.

From stage to television
The
roast
was not born on television, but on stage, more precisely at the New York Friars Club in 1949 with a Frenchman, the author and singer Maurice Chevalier, as the first
roastee
.
Comedy Centreal filmed its first shows there from 1998 to 2002, with comedians Jerry Stiller, Rob Reiner, Chevy Chase and Hugh Hefner as guests.
The practice also owes much to the "king of cool", actor and host Dean Martin, who hosted early
roasts
on
The Dean Martin Show
in 1974, before launching
The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast
, a series of television specials airing every both months.
Kirk Douglas, Jimmy Stewart, Frank Sinatra, Mohamed Ali and even a certain Ronald Reagan go through the grill but come out barely burned, especially compared to the Comedy Central flamethrower.
Smile, you're "roasted"
Following the success of the New York Friars Club broadcasts, the American channel launched its own
roasts,
and the first, with stand-upper and actor Denis Leary (
Rescue Me
) in 2003, achieved the best audience on the channel… if we forget
South Park
.
Comedy Central Roast
airs on an annual basis and offers great television moments.
“Tonight, we honor a self-made millionaire, announces
roastmaster
Seth MacFarlane in front of his guest Donald Trump.
He started with nothing, worked hard and amassed a fortune.
This man is Fred Trump, Donald's father.

The reaction of the person concerned?
A strained smile.
A
roast
implies that the
roastee
plays the game, takes the jokes with humor, and not (too) seriously.
He is not always the only one to be the target of jokes, and his friends and relatives who are also present are not spared, like Tommy Lee or Courtney Love during Pamela Anderson's
roast
, almost entirely focused on his sexuality.
At the end, the roles are fortunately reversed, and the
roastee
becomes the
roaster
and can he or she also let go of the floodgates.
While there are theoretically no taboo subjects, some guests have imposed limits, such as Pamela Anderson on his hepatitis C, William Shatner on the death of his wife, or Donald Trump on the fact that he is not as rich he claims.
No, it's not a joke.
Over the shows, comedian Jeff Ross, unknown in France, has established himself as the master of the
roast , and launched the program
Historical Roasts
on Netflix in 2019
, where he pushes the concept to the point of absurdity since it's about
roasting
historical figures like Abraham Lincoln, Cleopatra, Freddie Mercury or… Anne Frank.
