"It should never have happened."

It is with these words that Ryan Coogler described the incongruous situation in which he found himself last January, and which is only revealed today, while the police reports were published on Wednesday.

According to

Variety

, the director of

Black Panther

was indeed mistaken for a bank robber, when he simply wanted to withdraw money at the counter of a branch of Bank of America.

On January 7, the filmmaker walked into the agency in Atlanta, Georgia, asking for a large sum of cash.

That day, Ryan Coogler wore a cap, sunglasses and a mask to protect himself from Covid-19.

During the withdrawal, he asks, by giving a handwritten note to the person at the counter, to “withdraw 12,000 dollars from my account.

Please count elsewhere.

I would like to be discreet”.

The counter clerk then thinks she is facing a robber and alerts her manager and the police.

Racist misconception

Four police officers immediately intervened and arrested two men who were waiting for the director by car outside the establishment.

They then handcuffed a presumably dumbfounded Ryan Coogler, who was escorted from the facility to the police vehicle.

It was only after verifying his identity that the creator of the MCU version of

Black Panther

was released.

And Bank of America has apologized.

“We deeply regret that this incident happened.

It should never have happened and we have apologized to Mr. Coogler,” a spokesperson for the facility told the publication.

The director also reacted by minimizing the incident: “This situation should never have happened.

However, Bank of America worked with me and fixed the issue to my satisfaction and we moved on.”

Ryan Coogler was in Atlanta to shoot

Black Panther 2

, which is slated for release next November.
