Endurance Begins Search for Shackleton's Legendary Ship in Antarctica
Asia The Titanic resurrects in the confines of China
The remains of the
Endurance
, the ship manned by
Ernest Shackleton
that sank in 1915 after becoming trapped in an ice pack in
Antarctica
, have been found more than a century later.
A team of marine adventurers, technicians and archaeologists have located the remains of the ship at the bottom of
the Weddell Sea
, almost 10,000 feet deep, using underwater drones, according to the New York Times and confirmed by the official Twitter account of the expedition. .
The Endurance sank after being trapped for 10 months in the ice.
Shackelton and his crew, who were on board, were part of the Imperial Transatlantic Expedition, in order to try to cross the frozen continent from end to end by passing through the pole.
That trip went down in history thanks to the miraculous survival of
Shackleton
and his crew, who managed to flee the place on foot and then using boats, being forced to "camp" on the ice until it broke.
It was on February 5 when, more than 100 years later, the search for Ernest Shackleton's missing ship began.
"The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust has the honor to confirm that the Endurance22 expedition, whose mission is to locate, monitor and film the remains of the
'Endurance'
(...) has set sail from Cape Town for the
Weddel Sea
, in the Antarctica" indicated at that time the organizers of the expedition.
To locate it, they have had to work in adverse weather conditions due to sub-zero temperatures in the area.
In a statement, John Shears, leader of the expedition, assures that they have "made polar history" with the discovery of the Endurance.
"We successfully completed the world's most challenging shipwreck
hunt,
" he adds.
The location where the ship was found, according to the New York Times, is about four miles south of the last location recorded by the ship's captain at the time, Frank Worsley.
The ship maintains a relatively well-preserved appearance due to the low water temperatures and the absence of wood-eating organisms in the Weddell Sea.
