• Women confront patriarchy in all its forms in “Women Do Cry” about daily life in Bulgaria.

  • Between motherhood, illness, work and love, the heroines of the film try to find their way.

“In tribute to our mothers”: the closing dedication

Women Do Cry

by Mina Mileva and Vesela Kazakova leaves no doubt.

This film discovered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section will talk about women in general and Bulgarian women in particular.

The least we can say is that the protagonists of this choral and family film do not have an easy life between motherhood, love, work and illness.

Maria Bakalova, seen in

Borat 2

which earned her an Oscar citation, is particularly moved as a 19-year-old girl with AIDS after an unprotected relationship with a man who "forgot" to tell her he was married.

Feminine solidarity

The patriarchy still has a bright future ahead of it when we see the way this desperate patient is treated by her gynecologist or how the men around her despise women and sometimes even lay their hands on them.

The two Bulgarian directors made their debut in the field of documentaries and it shows.

The viewer is taken to the guts when their heroines end up joining forces to resist.

"The message of the film is that solidarity between women is essential and it is not yet practiced enough", explains co-director Vesela Kazakova to the Cineuropa site.

Women Do Cry

is not tender with its male characters, all shown as obnoxious machos.

But it offers subtle portraits of women as well as exciting revelations about daily life in a little-known country.

The injured stork that opens and closes the film serves as a beautiful metaphor for a work that hangs around in your head for a long time once the screening is over.
