• The 18th edition of the Quais du Polar festival unveiled its plethora of programming for the first weekend of April in Lyon on Wednesday.

  • 130 authors of 20 different nationalities will find their audience in the emblematic places of the event, including the Palais de la Bourse.

  • Quais du Polar will also welcome authors close to the noir novel, to establish bridges with the most popular literary genre in France.

After a 2020 edition murdered by the Covid-19, a 2021 edition kidnapped and found in July (in the rain!), the Quais du Polar team is delighted to find its crimes, its cops and its investigations as in the good old days .

Even if it means overloading the first weekend of April with events, jam-packed with encounters, screenings and events that have made the reputation of the festival.

“We are very happy to go back to basics”, recognizes Albane Lafanechère, new president of the festival which will be held in Lyon and in mainland France.

“Quais du Polar is one of the five most important events in France, in terms of attendance and books sold.

We know that publishers, authors and the public are eager to return in numbers.

The return of great international authors

Hélène Fischbach, director of the festival, confirms for her part “the great return of ten independent bookstores to the Palais de la Bourse, to welcome authors for signings.

We are going back to a much more international program than last year, with 130 authors of 20 different nationalities, including the Americans John Grisham and Harlan Coben, the Icelandic Arnaldur Indridason, the British Paula Hawkins, the Swedish Camilla Grebe, the South- African Deon Meyer…” In France, we can count on Franck Thilliez, Olivier Norek, Bernard Minier, Sonja Delzongle, Guillaume Musso who will sponsor the Quais du Polar prize for short stories, and Michel Bussi who will share his manufacturing secrets during a master class.

Other classics of the festival, the Great Investigation, entitled "20,000 leagues under the city", will include for the first time Villeurbanne, in its capacity as Capital of Culture 2022. The Black Dictation, it will be provided by Antoine de Caunes who will read a excerpt from San Antonio in the beautiful salons of the Hôtel de Ville.

The youth sector is also well filled, especially with the very prolific Marie-Aude Murail.

Gateways to miscellaneous facts and thriller adaptations

“The festival is also keen to create bridges between genres, to open up the frontiers of crime fiction, adds Hélène Fischbach.

We will thus welcome authors whose universe is close to the noir novel, such as Philippe Jaenada and Patricia Tourancheau, who will discuss their treatment of the news item, and comic book authors.

If the main theme is that of the city, other themes will be addressed such as resistance, dystopias and adaptations of thrillers.

Several screenings are planned, in the presence of the authors who inspired the films: Irvine Welsh, the author of

Trainspotting

, will present a preview of the series taken from his novel

Crime

.

At the end of the festival, eight prizes will be awarded, including the Quais du Polar/

20 Minutes

readers' prize .

This one had been given last year to Patrice Gain for his novel

The smile of the Scorpion

.

But it would be criminal to unveil his successor today…
