The Hegalaldia association, the only care center for wild animals in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, collected a total of 2,795 animals in 2021, or 500 more than the previous year.
Stéphan Maury, one of the association's healers, explained to
Sud Ouest
that the department was experiencing a decline in biodiversity.
Mountain fauna on borrowed time
This is particularly the case in peri-urban areas, where debocification has deprived many birds of their food.
In the mountains, wildlife always has access to its food thanks to farm animals coming to die in attitude.
The situation could however worsen soon with the crisis of the stockbreeders.
The increase in the number of animals taken in is a trend observed in all French centres.
It can be explained, among other things, by an increase in the number of hedgehogs.
The caretaker thus reminded that it was necessary to think before picking up these small insectivores because once out of their environment, they can no longer readapt to it.
