Hatsuko Miyahira, a living national treasure and writer of "Shuri textiles" in Okinawa, died on the 7th of this month due to senility.

She was 99 years old.

Mr. Miyahira is from Shuri, Naha City, and after graduating from a girls' school studying crafts and dyeing and weaving, he learned the technique of "Shuri textiles" in earnest and taught younger generations.

"Shuri textile" is a traditional textile that was developed in the Shuri district during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, but the area became burnt during the Battle of Okinawa and inheritance was threatened.



After the war, Mr. Miyahira worked on the reconstruction of "Shuri's textile" by focusing on training his successor, and in 1998, he was certified as a national important intangible cultural property holder, so-called "Living National Treasure". rice field.



According to his family, he died of senility at a hospital in Yaese Town on the night of the 7th of this month.
