Louis CK The Genie and the Pig
Pamela Adlon was splashed in the face by the Louis CK scandal.
When her friend was cancelled,
Better things
, the series they had created together, suffered the consequences.
This is how one of the most personal, original, sensitive and fun fictions of recent years went even further into the background in which the comedian resolved his embarrassing issues.
On the other hand, that
Better things
has only opted for acting awards for its protagonist
says very little about those awards
.
Because it is a great and wonderful series.
Built around the character of Sam Fox, alter ego of Adlon herself,
Better things
is
the little story of a little woman who has to do everything but assumes that everything is not going to work out for her
.
Like Pamela, Sam is an actress, divorcee, and mother.
They both live in Los Angeles and share a sense of humor.
We know the latter because Sam is written by Pam and because the obsessions and themes of this creator are very recognizable.
Recognizable as hers, but also from anyone who admits that this
short, cheeky and tremendously noble actress
It is a mirror in which to look at yourself.
Sam Fox (only the name is a joke, poor woman) is one of those female characters that television decided to make their own because they didn't exist for the cinema.
Imperfect, contradictory, incoherent and mistaken aunts.
Normal aunts
, in all the extension and clumsiness of the word.
Sam of life.
Pams of life.
Coinciding with the Spanish leg of Louis CK's new tour (he performed a few days ago in Barcelona and on Tuesday the 8th, Women's Day, he will perform in Madrid), the fifth season of
Better things
has premiered on HBO Max.
She has done it with two delicious episodes for which we have been admiring her for years and probably empty for those who face them without knowing anything about the series or its creator.
The delicate series of Louis and Pamela does not tell big things but little things
.
Just as he does not wallow in miseries, but turns them into those little daily defeats that life is made of.
Sam's life is
disastrous, multicolored, hopeful and chaotic
, adjectives that we can all apply to our own lives to a greater or lesser extent.
Even if you are not a Californian actress with three daughters, a heavy mother and a miserable ex, you can surely see yourself in Sam Fox. His cooking is perhaps the most realistic in all of television.
The day I get to interview Pamela Adlon I'll ask her if the food in
Better Things
is real.
Even I ask myself those silly questions when I'm in front of one of those series so good that one runs the risk of thinking that they don't have a huge writing, directing and acting job behind them.
Better things
shouldn't just go down in history as the series that Louis CK jinxed
.
It would not be fair.
