The journalist Lucía Méndez (Palacios de Sanabria, Zamora, 1960) has been awarded the VI Raúl del Pozo Prize for Opinion Journalism, which pays tribute to the work of those professionals who contribute from the media to support the democratic press and the free opinion in Spain.

The award was founded by a group of professionals from the Spanish press at the mythical Casa Paco Restaurant, in Madrid de los Austrias, and chaired by the person who gives it its name.

The jury is made up of Arturo Pérez-Reverte, Antonio Lucas, Karina Sáinz Borgo, Manuel Jabois, Eduardo Galán and Ignacio Camacho

.

And together with them, the name of David Gistau (who died in February 2020) and who was one of the founders, is kept in the minutes.

Lucía Méndez is one of the most outstanding professionals in political journalism in the written press from the pages of EL MUNDO and a collaborator, in addition, in different radio and television talk shows.

She manages a critical style with the abuse that is sometimes exerted from the political sphere

.

Upon hearing the news of the award of the Raúl del Pozo Prize for opinion journalism, he said: "My gratitude is infinite for receiving a recognition that bears the name of a giant of columnism, a gentleman of journalism and a man so loved by all. It is an honor for anyone who makes a living collecting letters, telling stories and trying to express their opinions freely without wearing a uniform or digging trenches.

this profession brings us good news and gives us gifts that help us continue in times of pessimism

and despair.

Also, this award is more loved and appreciated because it comes from an authentic and brilliant jury."

Lucía Méndez's opinion carries weight.

In her work as a political chronicler, she defends listening as the main tool.

And then the rest.

Listening is being able to reflect.

"I have to admit that I measure words. And it is true that I talk to all politicians, they talk to me and I must have their trust so that they tell me things. And I think that

the only way to write about politics is to talk to people that are dedicated to that

. Be careful, not bothering them does not mean not criticizing them".

Lucía Méndez receives this distinction during a dinner in which the president of the jury, Raúl del Pozo, gives the winner the supporting document with which these awards are coined, which in previous editions have gone to

Carlos Alsina

(Onda Cero ),

(

eldiario.es

),

Pedro García Cuartango

(former director of this newspaper, now at

Abc

),

Soledad Gallego-Díaz

(

El País

) and

Enric González

.

Likewise, he dedicates the award "to all the journalists who

inform the world of the disasters of the war since the war itself

, beginning with my fellow journalists and continuing with all the others".

For his part, Raúl del Pozo announced that the award will increase the jury by one more person and the search for funding has begun to provide an award "which is beginning to stand out as

one of the events of the year in Spanish journalism

due to the seriousness of the deliberations, which in previous appointments have exceeded three hours of intense discussion", he explains.

Lucía Méndez has been awarded unanimously.
