The gender equality index within companies improved slightly in 2021, but a handful of them will for the first time receive a financial penalty for lack of progress, according to the report published Monday by the Ministry of Labor .

This score includes five criteria: the gender pay gap (40 points), the gap in annual raises (20 points), the gap in promotions (15 points), raises on return from maternity leave ( 15 points) and the share of women in the ten highest salaries (10 points).

Companies with more than 250 employees have been required to publish their overall score (out of 100) since 2019 at the beginning of March, and those with 50 to 250 employees since 2020. When the score is below 75, the company must take measures corrections within three years.

This year, 61% of companies with more than 50 employees declared their index, a stable and still partial figure (they were 76% at the end of 2021).

The overall average score increases by one point, from 85 to 86 out of 100.

"The 🇫🇷 is one of the only countries 🇪🇺 to have equipped itself with a tool that has made it possible to initiate a dynamic of reducing professional inequalities".

The “return from maternity leave” to be perfected

The two indicators "return from maternity leave" and "parity in the 10 highest salaries", which were the black spots of 2020, each increase by one point.

Nevertheless, "they are still lagging behind", notes the Minister of Labor Elisabeth Borne in

Les Echos

.

Thus 2,354 companies, or 11% of the total, still obtained a score of 0 for the “return from maternity leave” indicator.

Companies with more than 1,000 employees obtain the best results: 85% published their index at the beginning of March for an average score of 89 out of 100.

Conversely, only 53% of companies with 50 to 250 employees responded.

Among the bad students, 16 companies with more than 250 employees recorded a score below 75 for the fourth consecutive year.

For them, "sanctions will apply for the first time", up to 1% of the payroll, confirms Elisabeth Borne.

Eleven others have not yet declared their index and could join them.

Among those with 50 to 250 employees, 140 have had a score below 75 for three years and may be penalized in 2023 if they do not exceed 75 points.

Only 2% of companies obtain the maximum score of 100. Since this year, companies with a score of less than 85 points are required to adopt measures to improve.
