"The underside of the cards": Arte creates a daily meeting on current events in Ukraine

In the context of the war in Ukraine, the Franco-German channel is creating a new daily program to decipher the news through history and geography.

From Monday evening, the journalist and presenter Emilie Aubry offers "The bottom of the cards, the essential", a daily variation of her 2:30 show to return to the news of the day in Ukraine through the prism of geostrategy and borders.

Emilie Aubry explains to us at the microphone of Europe 1 why this new daily format is necessary today.

"As we have the feeling that we are really changing times and that the time of purely digital warfare is over to return to border wars, we said to ourselves that it was really a shame to not to use more of our stock of animated cards, which is colossal", she recalls.

"Depending on the news of the day, we will use this stock to zoom in, in a few minutes, on one of the issues raised by this historic crisis in Ukraine, triggered by the Russian offensive."

The objective of this daily zoom of the "Below the maps" is to shed light on the news by returning to historical and geographical fundamentals through photos and maps.

"We can, for example, start from a photo of what is happening on the border between Poland and Ukraine", explains Emilie Aubry.

“These two countries share more than 500km of common border. And then we will explain to you why geographically and historically the Poles are so sensitive to the situation of their Ukrainian neighbor. invasions and which caused Poland to disappear twice from the map."
