Want to become a police officer?

From this Monday, the police are launching a vast campaign to recruit reservists whose tasks will be more operational: citizens in police uniform, trained in the use of a weapon and on a mission on the public highway:

With 6,700 personnel, including a large majority of retired police officers, the reserve of the national police is historically behind that of the gendarmerie, with nearly 40,000 members.

“The objective is to tend towards 30,000, of which 70% are citizens”, explains Commissioner General Frédéric Laissy, head of the police information and communication service (Sicop).

The Olympics as a goal

With a dual ambition: to strengthen services in the field, particularly in view of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and to improve the link with the population, some of whom, particularly young people, have been able to express distrust of the police in recent years.

From 2022, 1,500 reservists must be recruited, then 2,000 to 2,500 in 2023. The conditions for applying: be at least 18 years old, have a clean criminal record, submit to a security investigation and pass an oral.

Registration is done directly online on the website www.service-public.fr or via the portal www.devenirpolicier.fr.

To encourage vocations and attract applications, the police decided to change the current status of reservists to make it more attractive.

Until now, “citizens engaged in the reserve could only exercise too limited a number of missions”, such as “support, reception, logistics”, and always “in civilian clothes”, summarizes Frédéric Laissy .

Paid vacations

Future reservists will receive an initial four-week training, within CRS companies, during which they will learn shooting and intervention and arrest techniques.

At the end, they will be able to carry out police-rescue patrols on public roads, carry out surveillance at borders and in airport areas or carry out road checks (alcohol level, speed) within a motorway CRS.

On the other hand, they will not be able to join an anti-crime brigade (BAC), a judicial police service or maintain order.

They will wear the "same uniform" as the police with a personal bulletproof vest, but will have to surrender their weapon after each mission.

Sessions, 90 days maximum per year, are remunerated around 80 euros.
