The final days of campaigning were steeped in the war in Ukraine and the United States' reaction to Russian aggression.

A test for Koreans dependent for their safety on their American military ally.

A failure to demonstrate US leadership would likely increase civil society pressure for South Korea to have its own nuclear weapons.
